The School of Engineering and Technology’s 1996 Outstanding Alumnus

Dr. James A. DeLaura State received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology in 1967, as well as a Master of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Central Connecticut State University in 1970. Following graduation, Jim taught Industrial Arts in Wethersfield for several years before completing his doctorate degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 1974. He was an Assistant Professor of Industrial Technology at Southeastern Louisiana University before joining the CCSU faculty in 1976. Until 2003, Jim was a professor in the Department of Manufacturing and Construction Management. He is currently chairperson of the Department of Technology & Engineering Education.

During his service at Central, he has been active in university affairs, including chairperson of the Graduate Studies Committee for several years. Dr. DeLaura works closely with Connecticut industry through consulting activities with the Institute of Technology and Business Development in New Britain. He has provided classes on quality issues, management and advanced quality systems as a Certified Instructor for the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group. His experiences as a Certified Manufacturing Engineer has provided the basis for consulting activities on quality issues and have taken him to Hong Kong, Poland and the United Kingdom. Jim has served as president of the Connecticut Energy Foundation for the Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation in Hartford.

Jim is active professionally at the national level serving on visiting accreditation teams, on several of which he has served as chairperson. He serves as Region 1 Director for Epsilon Pi Tau, the international honor society for Technology & Engineering Education. He has also been active as a member of the Board of Accreditation of the National Association of Industrial Technology. In 1995, Jim was named as the NAIT Region 1 Outstanding Professor for the Year. The award was presented in recognition for "excellence in teaching, research and community."
