The School of Engineering and Technology’s 1999 Outstanding Alumnus

William Leahy is a 1970 graduate of Central Connecticut State University and is currently the Associate Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University. After graduation, Bill worked for the Guilford Public Schools as an instructor and program coordinator for Industrial Technology. While in Guilford, he completed his Master of Science from CCSU. In 1976, Bill transferred to Regional District 17 in Higganum, CT to coordinate vocational programs and also teach Electronics and Drafting.

In 1981, Bill was hired as a program administrator for commercial conservation programs at Northeast Utilities Service Company (NU). Over the next twenty-one years he held various management positions at NU including serving on numerous taskforces. In 1996 he became a member of the initial management team for Select Energy, the unregulated subsidiary designed to transition NU from the traditional monopoly through deregulation. At NU, he received National awards for Energy Innovation in 1985, 1986 and 1987, and was named Outstanding Campaign Coordinator by NU and Combined Health Appeal in 1996.

In 2002, Bill was appointed the Associate Executive Director for the Institute for Sustainable Energy at ECSU. The Institute was established by the CSU Board of Trustees to identify, develop and implement a means for achieving a sustainable energy future for Connecticut and the region. The Institute's work focuses on public policy, conservation and load management, renewable energy sources and environmental solutions.

Recognizing the value continuing education has on one career and life, Bill has made constant efforts to advance his knowledge including receiving a Master of Science in Marketing Management from Rensselaer-Hartford Graduate School in 1989. Bill resides with his wife in Killingworth, CT.
