Program Description:
The civil engineering program provides students with a broad and thorough education in civil engineering fundamentals, applications, and design that prepares them for the practice of civil engineering at the professional level with the skills necessary to meet the technical and social challenges of the future. The program provides a broad and thorough education in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering mechanics, and civil engineering, coupled with application of modern engineering tools. The program includes engineering education in structural design, geotechnical design, surveying, highway and transportation engineering, storm water protection analysis, water system design, and environmental engineering.
DegreeBachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET), 111 Market Place, #1050, Baltimore, MD 21202, tel. (410) 347-7700, (www.abet.org). As a federation of professional technical societies, ABET is recognized by US Department of Higher Education and internationally accepted by colleges, universities, and industry. ABET accreditation is required by most employers, and certifies the quality of engineering and engineering technology programs. Career Outcomes:Graduates will attain the skills for entry-level civil engineering positions leading to professional engineering registration, and will have a solid undergraduate foundation in general civil engineering principles, enabling continued education at advanced levels. Civil engineering often requires an understanding of steel, concrete, wood, asphalt, soils, rock, water, and chemicals; and the environmental conditions that affect the application of these materials. Civil engineering graduates will have the engineering analysis and design skills to apply their work to real projects that others can use.The program was designed to exceed the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC of ABET, www.abet.org) accreditation standards. Students were first admitted to the program in Fall 2009. The Department will seek EAC of ABET accreditation when the first group of students graduates.
